Left Turn Wait Times, Eagle Road Pot Holes

The Road Wizard Replies

Dear Road Wizard: I regularly travel through the intersection of Chinden (west) and Curtis Road (south) during my daily work commute. I have noticed at around 3:55 p.m., the traffic in the left-hand turn lane (right left-hand turn lane) is so backed up, it takes a couple of cycles to get through the signal. Is ACHD planning to leave the turn signal on a little longer to let the traffic through at that time?

Jeff

Road Wizard:

At 3:55 p.m. on weekdays, a timing plan change is taking place to allow the traffic signal to prepare for the PM commute traffic flow. If your clock is slightly fast (compared to the clock of the traffic signal system), you may be arriving as the afternoon timing plan is still running, which provides up to 15 seconds of programmed green time. It might get a little bit more if there is light(er) traffic on southbound Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Arriving slightly later and until 4 p.m. (during the approximately 5-minute window), the westbound (to southbound) left-turning movement gets up to 36 seconds of green time. During the PM commute timing plan (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.), this movement gets 30 seconds of green time.

There are also many times of the day where movements have their time shortened by ambulances traveling to and from St. Alphonsus Hospital, about 1.5 miles south of this intersection. They do not always have their lights and/or sirens on, so it can be difficult to spot them overriding the normal operation of the traffic signal which provides them a green light in their direction of travel and causes movements to be shortened or even possibly skipped.

With those factors considered, no change to the timing plan is anticipated anytime soon.

Dear Road Wizard: There are potholes on Eagle Road, again. Is there anything you can do about it? It makes for a bumpy ride.

Casey

Road Wizard:

As many of my readers know, Eagle Road (State Highway 55) is under the jurisdiction of the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) because it is a state highway. The Ada County Highway District is responsible for almost every other road in the county excluding state highways, I-84, the I-184 Connector, associated on-and off-ramps, and private roads.

If you have other potholes you'd like to report, ACHD has a very quick turn-around time for their repair (generally 24-hours). You can report potholes and other roadway issues using the Tell Us link, or the Reporter App located on the ACHD website.
