ADA COUNTY- The Ada County Highway District showcased its commitment to quality transportation at the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho's (COMPASS) Leadership in Motion Awards.
ACHD's Cassia Street Bikeway and Pedestrian Improvements project received the Leadership in Government award.
The Cassia Street Bikeway and Pedestrian Improvements project was completed in 2021 to create a low stress bikeway and significant pedestrian improvements on over three miles of Cassia Street. Among the improvements, a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge was built over the Ridenbaugh Canal with a new multi-use pathway through Cassia Park.
The project also included enhanced pedestrian and bicycle crossings, new sidewalks, and new pavement markings that added bike lanes while maintaining existing on-street parking.
"The improvements bring much-needed connectivity to the area," said Brian McCarthy, project management supervisor. "The enhancements along the Cassia Street Bikeway create an accessible, safe route for all users."
ACHD was also honored to nominate Governor Brad Little, who earned COMPASS' Leadership by Example, Elected Official Award. The award is presented to an elected or appointed official who demonstrates region-wide leadership in transportation and land use planning. ACHD nominated Governor Little for his historic investments in transportation without raising taxes or fees.
Governor Little championed the Leading Idaho initiative, which was approved by the state legislature. The initiative added $200 million for local bridges, as well as $200 million ongoing to help eliminate the backlog of transportation maintenance needs to self-sustain and improve Idaho's transportation system over the long term.
"Governor Little is unrelenting in his efforts to improve transportation in the Treasure Valley and the state of Idaho," said ACHD Executive Director Bruce Wong. "The Leading Idaho initiative clearly demonstrates his commitment to improve and maintain Idaho's transportation infrastructure for generations to come."
Additionally, the Leading Idaho initiative brought historic tax relief to all Idahoans, including one-time, immediate and ongoing tax relief to help Idahoans facing soaring inflation. Governor Little also led the way in increasing funding for K-12 education, and making key investments in career and workforce training.
"Our historic transportation investments are improving safety, promoting our economy, easing congestion, and saving Idahoans time on the road. A strong, reliable system of transportation infrastructure is critical to keep up with growth and secure a prosperous future for our state," Governor Little said.
The winners were announced during COMPASS' annual holiday luncheon on Monday. The full list of award winners is available on COMPASS' website.
